Two and a half thousand years after Hippocrates declared walking to be the best of all medicines, the World Health Organisation currently lists mobility impairment as a primary cause of declining health. Our finely-tuned bipedal physiology is particularly susceptible to being thrown off balance by age, injury, or disease; and between walking and the wheelchair, the only aids available—the walking stick and the walking frame—alter our natural gait so profoundly that they themselves induce further declines of functional capacity.
